Committee work is an excellent way to learn some soft skills, pad your CV with a fun extracurricular activity, and to connect with people in different stages of their career. Three of NPGA’s committees are having open meetings next week. Whether it’s by giving your input during meetings, actively organizing events, or showing up and helping out during events: We’d love to have you as an active member of NPGA. Interested? Read the descriptions below and drop by in one (or all!) of the meetings to check it out. Can’t make it on the assigned date but still interested? No worries, just contact us and we’ll make sure you can attend the next meeting!
who can join?
Any graduate student/candidate, or post-doc that does something affiliated with neuroscience at Virginia Tech can be part of NPGA and join one of our committees. This includes members of the School of Neuroscience, the FBRI, BMVS, MCB, Fralin, TBMH and Biomedical-Engineering
Interested in getting more involved in the Virginia Tech community as well as the broader New River Valley community? Consider joining NPGA’s Outreach Committee! We are a group of NPGA members who plan events to help spread our passion for neuroscience outside of the SoN community. Previous events organized by this committee have included visiting local elementary schools to excite them about science (and show them a few brains!), workshops for undergraduate students who would like help with their medical school and graduate school applications, and informational booths at science fairs in the local community! We are excited to welcome new members to this committee who are interested in sharing their science, knowledge, and experiences with the people in our local community. Chair: Keaton Unroe

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee
Are you interested in diversity and inclusion? Do you feel passionately about sharing your experiences or learning from others? Do you feel like you don’t know anything about those topics, but you want to learn more? The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee is working to actively promote diversity and inclusion in both the School of Neuroscience (SoN) and NPGA through educational and outreach opportunities, the sharing of resources, and moderating and facilitating conversations shared by trainees, faculty, and staff across the SoN. We would love to welcome you to the team and hope you can join us in planning our brand-new DEI workshops, as well as developing other activities, events, and conversations that will help to affirm every individual’s value and experiences. Interim Chair: Beatriz Torres
Oftentimes the biggest hurdle to learning something new is not knowing where to look or what has already been collected for you to access. Well, the resources committee is here to keep you up to date on the plethora of available resources for your graduate and postdoctoral training life. We are working to collect and consolidate numerous lists and links to web pages, apps, and databases that may be of use to you both in your research and in your daily life. If you enjoy scouring the web for useful tools or information and want to help your fellow colleagues, contact us. After all, the best way to be familiar with things is to find and learn them yourself! And, if you don’t want to join the resources committee, but you have a resource or suggestion that other people might find useful, head over to our resources page on the NPGA website and let us know about it!
