Pyramidal Neurons in ca1 of the hippocampus, sparsely labeled with mCherry

Pyramidal neurons in CA1 of the hippocampus sparsely labeled with mCherry.  This image was taken in vivo through a cannula window chronically implanted in this animal. Pyramidal neurons in CA1 are also known as place cells and encode spatial memory in mammals. We use imaging tools to study the circuitry underlying the spatial memory in the hippocampus.
